Academic Standards

ENGLISH LANGUAGE ARTS

  • 3.RC.1: Ask and answer questions to demonstrate comprehension of a text, referring explicitly to the text as the basis for answers.
  • 3.RC.2: Recount folktales, fables, and tall tales from diverse cultures; identify themes in these works.
  • 3.RC.3: Describe characters in a story and explain how their actions contribute to the plot.
  • 3.RC.5: Determine the main idea of a text and explain how details support it.
  • 3.RC.11: Apply context clues and text features to determine meanings of unknown words.
  • 3.RC.12: Identify relationships among words, including synonyms, antonyms, and multiple-meaning words.
  • 3.RF.4: Read multisyllabic words composed of roots and related prefixes and suffixes; read irregular contractions and possessives.

MATH

  • 3.M.3: Tell and write time to the nearest minute and solve problems involving addition and subtraction of time intervals.
  • 3.M.4: Find the value of collections of coins and bills, and solve real-world money problems.
  • 3.M.5: Find the area of rectangles and identify rectangles with equal or differing areas and perimeters.
  • 3.NS.2: Model unit fractions and non-unit fractions as parts of a whole (denominators limited to 2, 3, 4, 6, 8).
  • 3.CA.2: Solve real-world problems involving addition and subtraction of multi-digit numbers.
  • 3.CA.3: Model multiplication using equal groups, arrays, and number lines.
  • 3.DA.1: Collect, organize, and graph data; analyze and interpret results.

IREAD-3 Assessment

Each spring, third-grade students participate in the IREAD-3 Assessment, a statewide test that measures foundational reading skills. The purpose of this assessment is to ensure that students have mastered essential literacy standards necessary for future academic success. At Western Intermediate, we provide students with intentional instruction, targeted support, and plenty of encouragement to help them feel confident and prepared to pass!

 

Student Experiences

  • Dress-Up Days: Compound Word Day, Idiom Dress-Up Students get creative with words during these themed days that bring language learning to life! Whether combining two words to form a new one on Compound Word Day or acting out figurative expressions on Idiom Dress-Up Day, these events make vocabulary practice fun and memorable.
  • Field Trips: Christmas Tree Farm, Clowes Hall (Live Play) Our third graders enjoy hands-on and cultural learning through field trips like the Christmas Tree Farm, where they explore agriculture and traditions, and Clowes Hall, where they experience the excitement of live theater and storytelling.
  • Other Activities: Wacky Olympics, Team-Building Lessons, Hands-On Learning Students participate in engaging and collaborative activities designed to promote teamwork, problem-solving, and creativity. From Wacky Olympics to classroom challenges, these experiences help students connect learning with fun and build a strong classroom community.
