TEACHING AND LEARNING

ILEARN Information

All students in grades 3–5 participate in ILEARN Checkpoints three times each year to monitor progress and guide instruction. These checkpoints help teachers identify areas of strength and growth, ensuring that learning remains personalized and data-driven. In the spring, students take the ILEARN Summative Assessment, which measures mastery of Indiana Academic Standards in English Language Arts, Math, Science (4th grade), and Social Studies (5th grade). These assessments provide valuable insight into student learning and help us continue to refine and strengthen classroom instruction across all grade levels.

Applied Educational Neuroscience (AEN)

At Western Intermediate School, we are deeply committed to supporting the whole child through the principles of Applied Educational Neuroscience (AEN). Our goal is to help students understand how their brains and nervous systems work and how these systems impact learning, behavior, and relationships. We intentionally teach students about brain and body science, emotional regulation, and strategies for managing stress and attention.

Each classroom includes a polyvagal chart, which helps students identify and name their emotional and physiological states throughout the day. In addition, every student has their own brain magnet that they can move to show how they are feeling and where they are within their nervous system. Through daily check-ins, mindful practices, and open conversations about regulation, we empower our students to recognize what their brains need to be calm, connected, and ready to learn.

Growing Together at WIS

At Western Intermediate School, we believe great schools are built when teachers learn, grow, and succeed together. Our staff is working toward becoming an PLC Lead School, a recognition that celebrates schools where collaboration, data, and teamwork make a real difference for kids.

Every week, our teachers meet in professional learning teams to look closely at student progress, share ideas, and plan lessons that met the needs of every learner. Together, we focus on what matters most: strong instruction, meaningful feedback, and ensuring guaranteed and viable standards at each grade level.

We have already made incredible strides and continue to grow each year. At WIS, we are proud to say that our teachers do not just work in teams, they work as one community to help every child learn and thrive.
